There are now four Switch consoles in UK homes: the original Switch, the Switch OLED, the handheld-only Switch Lite and the larger Switch 2, which launched in June 2025. They share plenty of games but not always accessories. Screens range from 5.5 to 7.9 inches, docks don’t carry over between generations, and Switch 2 uses a different memory card format. How to Choose the Right Switch Accessories
Four Switch consoles, two memory card formats and controllers that don’t all attach to the newest model make a quick check worthwhile. These five points cover what changes between generations, whether you’re upgrading to Switch 2 or kitting out a Switch Lite for the car. Still unsure? Ask our team before you order.
Buy for your exact model
Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite and Switch 2 all have different screen sizes, so screen protectors are always model-specific and many cases are too. Switch 2 needs its own dock, and Switch Lite can’t connect to a TV at all. Check the models named on each listing.
Plan storage around how you buy games
Built-in storage is 32GB on Switch and Switch Lite, 64GB on OLED and 256GB on Switch 2. Older models take microSDXC cards, but Switch 2 only stores games on microSD Express cards. Some boxed Switch 2 games are Game-Key Cards that download the full game, so leave room.
Match controllers to how you play
Joy-Con are ideal for sharing, but a Pro Controller is more comfortable for long TV sessions. On Switch 2, Joy-Con 2 add mouse controls that some games use. Original Joy-Con still work wirelessly with Switch 2 but can’t attach or charge on it, so add a charging grip or stand.
Be choosy about docks and chargers
Stick to official or reputable docks and chargers that follow the USB-C Power Delivery standard, as poorly made ones can cause charging faults or worse. The original Switch power adapter can’t run Switch 2 in TV mode. Electrical Safety First explains how to spot unsafe chargers sold online.
Go wired for online play
Wi-Fi is fine for most games, but a wired connection gives steadier online matches. The Switch OLED dock and the Switch 2 dock both have a built-in LAN port, so you only need an Ethernet cable. The original Switch dock needs a USB LAN adapter plugged into one of its USB ports.

Nintendo Switch Accessories: Common Questions
Do my original Joy-Con and Pro Controller work with Switch 2?
Yes, for most games. Original Joy-Con and Pro Controllers pair with Switch 2 wirelessly, but original Joy-Con can’t slide onto the console or charge from it, and they don’t support the mouse controls some Switch 2 games need. You also can’t wake a docked Switch 2 from sleep with an original controller’s HOME button.
Can I use my old Switch microSD card in a Switch 2?
Not for games. Switch 2 can only save games and data to microSD Express cards, in sizes up to 2TB. A standard microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card from an older Switch can only be used to import screenshots and videos. Nintendo UK’s microSD Express FAQ has the full details.
Will a Switch or Switch OLED case and screen protector fit a Switch 2?
No. Switch 2 is larger than the earlier models and has a 7.9-inch screen, so it needs cases, grips and protectors made specifically for it. The original Switch and Switch OLED are much closer in size and some cases fit both, but their screen protectors are different sizes. Always check the model named on the listing.
Can I connect a Switch Lite to my TV?
No. Switch Lite is a handheld-only console with no video output, so docks and USB-C to HDMI adapters won’t work with it. It does pair with wireless controllers such as Joy-Con and the Pro Controller, which is handy for playing on a table with a stand.
What if an accessory turns out to be wrong for my console?
