How to Choose the Right PlayStation Accessories
PlayStation accessories are unusually fussy about which console and which model they fit, so it pays to check before you order. These are the five points our team works through whenever a PS5 or PS4 player asks us which accessory to pick.
Match the console generation first
PS5 games need a DualSense or DualSense Edge, and a DualSense won’t work on a PS4 at all. A DualShock 4 connects to PS5 but only controls PS4 games. The DualSense charges over USB-C and the DualShock 4 over micro-USB, so cables and docks aren’t interchangeable.
Buy PS5 SSD storage by the spec sheet
Sony’s specification calls for a PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD between 250GB and 8TB, ideally reading at 5,500MB/s or faster, with a heatsink or other cooling structure. Check the drive and heatsink fit the bay together; Sony’s M.2 SSD guide lists the exact dimensions.
Know what USB storage can and can’t do
A USB drive rated SuperSpeed 5Gbps or faster is a cost-effective way to hold a big library. PS4 games play straight from it, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back to internal or M.2 storage before you can play them.
Plan how your headset will connect
The PS5 doesn’t pair directly with standard Bluetooth headphones for game audio. Choose a headset with its own USB wireless adapter or PlayStation Link, or plug a wired headset into the DualSense’s 3.5mm jack for simple game sound and chat.
Think beyond the console

PlayStation Accessories: Common Questions
Can I use a PS4 controller on a PS5?
Yes, but only for PS4 games. A DualShock 4 connects to a PS5 and works with backwards-compatible PS4 titles, but PS5 games require a DualSense or DualSense Edge. It doesn’t work the other way round either: a DualSense can’t be used with a PS4 console.
What is the best storage upgrade for a PS5?
For PS5 games, an M.2 NVMe SSD that meets Sony’s specification is the best upgrade, because PS5 titles play directly from it. A USB external drive is a good-value extra for parking PS5 games you’re not playing and for running your PS4 library. Many players use both.
Do Bluetooth headphones work with a PS5?
Not directly for game audio. The PS5 doesn’t support standard Bluetooth headphones, so most players use a headset with its own USB wireless adapter, a PlayStation Link model such as Sony’s newer PULSE headsets and earbuds, or a wired headset plugged into the DualSense’s 3.5mm jack.
Does PS VR2 work with a PC?
Yes. With Sony’s PS VR2 PC adapter and a compatible gaming PC that has a DisplayPort 1.4 output and Bluetooth, PS VR2 can play PC VR games through SteamVR. Some features, including eye tracking, HDR and the Sense controllers’ adaptive triggers, aren’t available on PC.
Can I return a PlayStation accessory if I change my mind?
Usually, yes. Controllers, docks, drives and covers can all go back within 14 days of delivery if you change your mind — tell us inside that window and we’ll talk you through it. Sealed games and software are the exception: once they’re opened, a change of mind no longer qualifies. Faults are handled under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 instead.
